IN BRIEF: Costa Rica to study light rail system

Costa Rica's standing committee on budget matters has approved 3.5bn colones (US$6.7mn) to undertake feasibility studies for an interurban light rail system to serve capital San José's metropolitan area (GAM).

Guillermo Santana, president of Costa Rica's state rail administration Incofer, said the line would run east-west from an area between Cartago and Paraíso cities to Alajuela city, home to Juan Santamaría international airport.

In a first phase, approximately US$120mn would be invested for the reconstruction, rehabilitation, and modernization of existing rail lines between the Curridabat canton to Alajuela, according to a media release from the office of Costa Rica's legislative assembly.
