IN BRIEF: Damage caused by tropical storm Erika mounts

Tropical storm Erika unleashed heavy rainfall on Puerto Rico early Friday morning and will hit the Dominican Republic next after having caused significant damage on the Caribbean island of Dominica.

Meteorologists expect Erika to weaken and potentially even dissipate over the island of Hispaniola – home to the Dominican Republic and Haiti – and if Erika does continue on course, it would reach northeast Cuba over the weekend, US forecasters are predicting.

Erika's maximum sustained winds are said to be 85km/hr, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center.

Dominica has reported flooding and mudslides, which have resulted in confirmed deaths and other people reported as missing.
