- These works have ensured that the operation of the Cutzamala continues despite the prolonged drought.
- Actions are being executed for an investment amount of more than 1,075 million pesos, with which it is expected to recover an additional 1,505 l/s.
In coordination with the authorities of Mexico City and the State of Mexico, the National Water Commission ( Conagua ) carries out important hydraulic works that strengthen the supply of drinking water to the population of the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico, ensuring continuity in controlled delivery from the Cutzamala System.
These works carried out by Conagua include the replacement and rehabilitation of wells, the construction of new wells, the maintenance of the Madín I water treatment plant and the construction of the Madín II water treatment plant, as well as the irrigation technology in the dam area. The Forest, among other actions.
By having additional water flow due to the contribution of the works already completed, it has been possible to reduce the volume channeled from the Cutzamala System to the Valley of Mexico and guarantee continuity in its operation despite the prolonged drought. Additionally, work is underway on other works that will strengthen the complementary flow.
According to what was reported by the Water Basin Organization of the Valley of Mexico (OCAVM) of Conagua, the joint storage of the three Cutzamala dams (El Bosque, Valle de Bravo and Villa Victoria) is already registering a slight recovery and They are at 27.27% of their total capacity, and their improvement is expected to continue during the current rainy season.
With the works carried out by Conagua, which were instructed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, at the moment 1,262 liters per second (l/s) of water have been recovered and actions are being carried out for an investment amount greater than the 1,075 million pesos, with which it is expected to recover Press Release No. 0462-24 Location Mexico City Date July 3, 2024 Avenida Insurgentes Sur number 2416, Colonia Copilco El Bajo, Mayor's Office Coyoacán, Postal Code 04340, City from Mexico. Telephone: 55 5174 4000 www.gob.mx/conagua additional thousand 505 l/s. In addition, other works are planned that will allow the recovery of 1,980 l/s.
The basin that feeds the Cutzamala System has been affected during the last three years by an intense drought, which caused the levels of its three storage dams to decrease. For this reason, Conagua and the governments of Mexico City and the State of Mexico have implemented short, medium and long-term actions that will allow them to compensate for the drop in their levels.
Likewise, the Madín II water treatment plant was completed, which will have the capacity to provide 500 l/s, which will be distributed equally between Mexico City and the State of Mexico.
In the northern area, Conagua is in the process of constructing, rehabilitating and replacing wells, which will provide a flow of 750 l/s.
In the PAI South, work is being done on wells 10, 12, 14 and 19 of the Tláhuac Branch, which will generate an additional contribution of 155 l/s, works that will conclude in the month of September. Additionally, other wells under rehabilitation will contribute 100 l/s.
Regarding the works scheduled to begin, Conagua will also work on the conclusion of the Santo Tomás-Castera branch, which will provide 480 l/s; in the construction and rehabilitation of wells in the Lerma System, with a contribution of 800 l/s, and in the second stage of modernization of the irrigation area of the El Bosque dam, with a contribution of 700 l/s.
Conagua will continue working with the authorities of Mexico City and the State of Mexico to strengthen the water supply to the population of the Valley of Mexico, supporting the management of the municipal authorities.
