India’s C-DAC to build supercomputers in Brazil’s Paraná state

India’s Center for the Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), an entity linked to the country's science and tech ministry, will build supercomputers in Brazil's Paraná state for research in the fields of genomics, precision agriculture and artificial intelligence.

The investment follows a MoU signed in April between Paraná governor, Carlos Massa Ratinho Júnior, and C-DAC executives in India.

This week, the governor received a delegation from C-DAC on a visit to see the structures where the supercomputing network will be implemented in state universities, the state government reported.

The plan is to implement two supercomputers initially, one at Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa (UEPG) and another at the headquarters of the Paraná rural development institute (IDR-Paraná) in Londrina, focused mainly on artificial intelligence processes.

In addition, all seven state universities in Paraná will be “equipped with high-connectivity networks to have the capacity to receive the technology as well,” the state government said in a release, without providing further details.

The agreement signed between Paraná and C-DAC includes technology transfer for the assembly of high-performance computers (HPC) in the state.

The computers will be assembled by Brazilian electronics company Hi-MIX, based in Pato Branco, whereas Indian multinational TCS, which recently announced the expansion of its operations in Paraná, may participate as a consultant.
