Indotel highlights achievements in closing the digital divide

Santo Domingo, DN- The Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL) ends the year 2023 with progress in closing the digital divide in the country, through the implementation of different projects and public policies that have managed to position the Dominican Republic as a Technological HUB in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The current management led by the president of the Indotel Board of Directors, Nelson Arroyo, worked on the creation and execution of connectivity access infrastructure projects, as well as the implementation of digital skills programs that contribute to the use of information technologies. and communication (ICT), allowing Dominicans to improve their economic and social reality, and their easy and quick insertion into the labor market.

In addition, it expanded the Dominicana Conectada program by increasing to more than 1,000 free WiFi access points, located in public transportation systems, schools, hospital centers and areas of high population density.

The radio spectrum tender was also launched on the market, leaving the 700, 2300 and 3600 MHz bands available for use, which will be prioritized based on the highest total economic value per year.


Modernization of the State

Indotel developed and launched the Digital Document and Signature Validation platform of the Dominican Republic, “Validafirma”, which aims to have a system that facilitates the verification and validation of the authenticity, integrity and legality of digitally signed documents. in the national territory. During its first months, the platform has been used by more than 3,131 users. Likewise, the new mobile application, App Indotel, was launched and updated, through which users can access the institution's services, verify the amount of contracted services, measure internet speed and execution and monitoring. of complaints or complaints.

Digital Terrestrial Television (TTD)

Digital skills development

The results of the evaluation process of the Canasta Digital Social pilot project showed that it positively impacted 2,000 women, causing 91% of them to improve their quality of life, 33% managed to increase the income and sales of the business created from this plan, 12% used it for formal studies, 18% non-formal studies, 28% communication and 48% to promote services or products.

This led to the launch of the second phase of the project that will benefit 4,300 women heads of households in vulnerable conditions, providing them with a mobile device and a full subsidy for connectivity service for a period of 24 months; Likewise, the beneficiaries will receive digital skills training, which will serve their personal development and take advantage of the opportunities offered by new technologies.

Interinstitutional Agreements

Throughout 2023, Indotel signed multiple agreements with a view to continuing to achieve the objectives of improving the lives of citizens through increasing levels of connectivity and development of digital skills.

Among the agreements signed is an alliance with the Community Higher Technical Institute (ITSC) in which we transfer and adapt the facilities of a Computer Training Center (CCI) in the municipality of Baní, which will be used as an extension of said educational entity. technique, and thus contribute to the technological training and technical education of the inhabitants of that community.

We began a cooperation agreement collaborating with the National Health Service (SNS), for the installation of satellite internet kits in four Primary Care Units (UNAP) located in the provinces of Elías Piña, El Seibo and Montecristi, with the objective to provide them with broadband internet to support the connectivity process in said centers and reduce the digital divide in the country. This agreement contemplates that the project will begin in a first stage with the installation of a satellite kit and the necessary access network in the four health centers in the aforementioned communities.

Likewise, we signed an agreement with the Technological Institute of the Americas (ITLA) in this cooperation agreement we come together to contemplate the physical adaptation of the infrastructure of the Computer Training Centers (CCI), located in the provinces of San Francisco de Macorís, Pedernales, San Pedro de Macorís, expansion of classrooms, Azua and Moca, with the purpose of converting them into extensions of said educational entity, benefiting the inhabitants of these districts in the development of technological training, which will serve to facilitate their insertion in the working market.

Together with the Spanish satellite solutions company Hispasat, we delivered three virtual classrooms in rural communities in the provinces of San Pedro de Macorís, Independencia and Bahoruco, a program that will benefit approximately 300 students from these communities.

International recognitions

The Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) for its exceptional contributions to the regulation of the telecommunications sector in the Dominican Republic, thus contributing to improving industry standards and promoting its growth and development, obtained international recognition during the year 2023 obtained by the work we do to strengthen the telecommunications sector.

The regulatory entity was awarded “Regulator of the Year” at the Conecta Latam Awards 2023, held in Panama, for our exceptional contributions to the regulation of the telecommunications sector in the Dominican Republic, thus contributing to improving industry standards and promoting its growth and development.

Also, we received Recognition for the expansion of green purchases where we contribute, for a sustainable government during the XV Quality Week 2023, organized by the Ministry of Public Administration (Map), from the State to ecological preservation and reducing the negative impact For the enviroment.

On the other hand, qualified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as “Fifth Generation Advanced Regulator”, due to the public policies that our entity has been implementing in favor of the development of the sector at the level of connectivity and achieving the closure of the digital divide.

Likewise, we obtained the Igualando RD Seal for the public sector in the silver category, which recognizes efforts towards equality between men and women. The Seal was awarded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Ministry of Women, entities that evaluated the work carried out by Indotel.
