Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL) and the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) signed an inter-institutional agreement to improve connectivity levels and access to digital resources in different higher education centers in the four regions from the country.
This agreement has as its mission the digital transformation of the country's higher education, through the development of the “UASD Conectada” project, in which INDOTEL will make an investment of USD$7.6 million through financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
The agreement was signed by the president of the INDOTEL Board of Directors, Nelson Arroyo, and the rector of the UASD, Editrudis Beltrán.
“The signing of this agreement, without a doubt, is a transcendental moment because what we signed today is a point of progress for this academy and its students to have access to quality internet,” said the head of INDOTEL.
He highlighted that this project is part of the Dominican government's vision of promoting the productive use of ICT and access to cutting-edge technologies.
Likewise, the rector of the UASD expressed his gratitude to INDOTEL for the implementation of this project at the university.
“This project will reduce the digital divide and provide a free, quality connection for our students,” Beltrán explained.
The project focuses on the installation of broadband network infrastructure and WiFi-6 wireless internet in the areas of Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Pedro de Macorís and San Francisco de Macorís.
This initiative will have a direct positive impact on more than 100 thousand students, improving their educational experience and strengthening the processes of
research, innovation and development of digital inclusion in the higher education sector.
The agreement between both institutions contemplates creating a digital ecosystem that allows the integration of advanced technologies in the teaching-learning process, with augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing technologies.
In addition, a Network Operations Center (NOC) will be established, which will serve for centralized monitoring and management of the infrastructure, thus ensuring maximum operational efficiency and network security.
Key Technical Components:
• Access Network (LAN/WLAN): Implementation of a state-of-the-art wireless infrastructure, capable of supporting the growing number of devices and the demands for digital educational tools.
• Connectivity Network (WAN): Through strategic collaborations, high-capacity fiber optic links will be established, connecting the UASD campuses with key optical nodes for efficient and secure data transmission.
• Network Operations Center (NOC): A vital component for network management and monitoring, ensuring maximum efficiency and security in data transmission.
INDOTEL directors and authorities from the higher education academy also participated in the signing of this agreement.
