Chile needs to double air traffic to lead regional air travel - LAN CEO

Bnamericas

The country needs to double air traffic in the coming ten years, reaching over 32mn passengers by 2024, if it wishes to lead regional air travel, said LAN Chile CEO Enrique Elsaca.

Chile needs more efficient concessions and lower flight costs in order to achieve this goal, said Elsaca, as cited by local daily Diario Financiero.

It also needs adequate infrastructure for growth and improved coordination between authorities, government and companies, in order to address domestic challenges facing the local air travel industry, he added.

Santiago's terminal should aim to be a hub for Argentines, who currently prefer the Buenos Aires airport for international flights.

The government plans to invest US$127mn in air travel infrastructure in 2014-18, which will be spent mainly on new terminals in the south of the country, according to the newspaper. It has also earmarked US$72.7mn for works at the Santiago airport through 2018.
