Internet Society Puerto Rico, the new partner of 5G Americas to promote digitalization

BUENOS AIRES, September 19, 2023.- 5G Americas, the industry and voice association of 5G and LTE for the Americas, signed a cooperation agreement with the Internet Society, Puerto Rico Chapter, ISOCPR, in order to carry out actions collaborative efforts to promote the development of telecommunications and information and communication technologies (ICT), such as 5G, in Puerto Rico.

5G Americas is an industry organization composed of leading service providers and manufacturers in the telecommunications industry, advocating for the promotion and development of the ecosystem of wireless broadband technologies in the Americas to drive digital transformation. Meanwhile, ISOCPR is a non-profit organization, incorporated into the Department of State of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; whose mission is to create a community that encourages participation and leadership in areas important to the evolution of the Internet by providing reliable information about said ecosystem and forums for the discussion of topics that affect the evolution, development and use of the Internet in technical contexts, commercial, social and other types.

Regarding the signing of this agreement, Norberto Cruz, president of ISOCPR expressed that “the organization seeks to facilitate and support the technical evolution of the Internet in Puerto Rico as a means of communication, collaboration, research and education; and stimulate the participation of the island's business, scientific and academic community, local businesses, government and others in the broad adoption and evolution of the Internet.” In this framework, he added "we celebrate the agreement with 5G Americas, as it allows us to join forces in this tireless journey towards connectivity and access to technologies within the framework of a digital economy."

For his part, José Otero, vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean of 5G Americas, highlighted that the interest with this agreement is “to continue jointly promoting knowledge and comprehensive appropriation of new access technologies, both wired and wireless, based on a “integrative and transversal vision of telecommunications as essential allies for the economic and social development of countries.” Likewise, he expressed that “Puerto Rico has great potential to continue advancing in its digitalization, the challenges it has in terms of connectivity require articulated work from the government and all other actors involved, it is necessary to continue the discussion about the importance of having updated data. We hope through this agreement to help add different perspectives that contribute to a better understanding by public policy decision makers of the need to appropriate new technologies in all productive segments of the economy in order to march towards a transformation. digital that benefits all residents of Puerto Rico.”

Recently, ISOCPR participated in one of the virtual sessions of 5G Americas: “Talks with Experts: The future of Telecommunications in Puerto Rico”, where the president of ISOC for the island, Norberto Cruz, shared the progress and challenges of the country facing to the consolidation of the digitalization panorama and the deployment of 5G. This was the first of several activities that both organizations will carry out within the framework of the cooperation agreement they have signed, aimed at promoting the analysis of telecommunications and ICT in this country and in the context of other Caribbean countries.
