Internexa expands Colombian footprint with network node in Antioquia

Telecoms wholesale company Internexa expanded its footprint in Colombia with the activation of a new network node in the city of Marinilla, Antioquia department.

Marinilla is 47km from Medellín, capital of Antioquia and the main connectivity hub in that part of the country.

According to Internexa, the new structure has 100GB capacity to provide ethernet and IP services and will soon be served by a fiber ring.

“This node not only optimizes the speed and efficiency of our connections, but also reinforces the redundancy and resilience of our network,” the company said.

Controlled by power group Isa, Internexa provides wholesale, datacenter integration and connectivity telecommunications services in Colombia, Peru and Chile, and also has a commercial presence in the US.

The company's operations in Argentina and Brazil were sold this year to Datco's Silica Networks and to Megatelecom, respectively, as the company decided to concentrate its efforts on the Andean markets.

Colombia, together with Peru, has been a particular focus for the group as Internexa seeks to triple its value within five years.

In Colombia, the company is expected to invest up to 90bn pesos (US$20mn) in fiber optics over a three-year period.

Furthermore, as part of the Connectivity to Change Lives program, ICT ministry MinTIC and Internexa announced an agreement in July to increase network penetration and connect 62,000 homes in 32 municipalities across Chocó, Nariño, Cauca and Antioquia departments.

One of Internexa’s two key projects is to decentralize connectivity from major cities such as Bogotá and Medellín, and facilitate edge and content distribution.

Prior to its sales in Argentina and Brazil, the company's network spanned 57,000km of terrestrial and submarine optical fibers.

Its main telecom clients include Entel, Avantel and GTD Colombia.
