Itaipu reaches a new milestone in energy generation with 3,000 million MWH since 1984

This Itaipu Binational release was published using machine translation.

he ITAIPU Hydroelectric Plant this Sunday reached 3,000 million megawatt hours (MWh) of energy generated since the beginning of its operation in May 1984. This is a historical mark that no other hydroelectric plant in the world achieved. This new milestone for the binational enterprise, a world leader in clean and renewable energy generation, reinforces the strategic importance of ITAIPU for the sustainable development and energy security of Paraguay and Brazil.

With 20 generating units and 14,000 MW of installed power, ITAIPU supplies 88.38% of all the energy in the National Interconnected System (SINPY). This means that almost 9 out of every 10 Paraguayan homes receive the energy generated by the Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The 3,000 million MWh of accumulated production would be approximately equivalent to the consumption of all of Paraguay for 136 years and of Brazil for 5 years.

No other hydropower plant in the world has generated so much clean, renewable energy, and it is unlikely that any other will exceed this amount in the coming decades.

Among the factors that have contributed to ITAIPU obtaining this achievement are the optimal maintenance of the facilities and operational efficiency, which are supported by a qualified staff of professional engineers and technicians.

Likewise, the high availability of equipment such as generating units, transmission lines and transformers, among others, implies the fulfillment of business goals defined by the Entity's senior management to satisfy the energy demand.

It is also important to highlight the Technological Update process that the ITAIPU Hydroelectric Power Plant is currently undergoing; the most ambitious project after the construction of the dam itself. With this renovation and modernization of the plant, auspicious results are expected in relation to the reliability of the equipment and energy generation, among other positive factors.

For the authorities and the team of professionals of the Binacional, the amount of energy produced since the beginning of the operation of the Plant represents a great achievement, since the energy generation of ITAIPU is also associated with the development of two nations in almost 40 years of production.

The achievement of the new brand occurs in one of the most important years in the history of the Entity, since on May 5, 2024 it will reach 40 years of production and, on the 17th of the same month, it will celebrate 50 years of production. the creation of the binational company.

The energy generated by ITAIPU is not only an engine of growth and economic strengthening for both countries, it is also an investment translated into actions of social and environmental responsibility, as established by its mission line.

So much so that, in four decades of production, the Binacional contributed around USD 13,077.2 million to Paraguay, within the framework of compliance with Annex C of the Treaty. Of that amount, approximately USD 6,714.1 million correspond to royalties; USD 5,247.7 million for the transfer of energy and USD 1,115.4 million in payments to ANDE.
