Jamaica, CHEC sign bypass contract

Jamaica's government and construction firm China Harbour Engineering company (CHEC) signed a contract for the construction of a bypass in Montego Bay, the island's second largest city and most popular beach resort.

Construction works are expected to begin during the 2019/2020 fiscal year, Karl Samuda, who serves as minister without portfolio at the ministry of economic growth and job creation, told reporters.

Required investments are around US$200mn for which the government has applied for a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China , according to earlier press reports.

The bypass will run from Ironshore, near Sangster International airport, to Bogue Road, alleviating congestion problems in the resort city.
