Jamaica launches PET recycling program

Bnamericas

Jamaica's government has kicked off a recycling program to recover 4,690t of PET and create jobs for 3,000 people over the next three years, government news service JIS reported.

"This program will see the establishment of satellite depots in strategic locations around the island, to facilitate collection of PET bottles. These depots will receive the reclaimed bottles, and bulk bale them, so as to increase efficiencies in handling, storage and transportation" for overseas shipping and processing, housing minister Morais Guy said.

The project, in which the government expects to invest J$150mn (US$1.3mn) over the three years, is being managed by public/private sector group Recycling Partners of Jamaica and coordinated under the Jamaica Emergency Employment Program (JEEP).
