Jamaica launches water loss project
The government of drought-stricken Jamaica has kicked off a 4.9bn Jamaican dollar (US$42mn) program to reduce water loss.
The National Water Commission (NWC) and Israeli firm Miya inked a contract for the IDB-financed five-year project to improve water supply in Kingston and St Andrew.
The program aims to reduce non-revenue water (NRW), which is currently estimated at 108Ml/day or 53% of the volume that enters the water supply and distribution networks, NWC said in a statement.
The goal is to reduce NRW to 37% in year two, 30% in year three and 20% in year five.
NWC said the program will reduce the need to build new water production plants by improving supply efficiency and reliability.
