Jamaica renewable energy call draws over 40 firms

Forty-two companies submitted expressions of interest in the Jamaican government’s call to procure 100MW of renewable power.

Around 52% of firms are local, 14% from the US, 10% European and 24% from other nations, with total submitted capacity of 2,697MW (hydro, solar, wind and biomass), according to an update from the Generation Procurement Entity (GPE). The process began in May.

GPE, which did not disclose names or provide a breakdown by technology, expects to publish the RFP in September and the PPA in October. Registration will take place October-December and the submission of bids is scheduled for February.

Having submitted an expression of interest is not a condition for participating in the RFP.

The launch of a second tranche for 168MW is penciled in for next year.

The country’s renewable energy target is 50% by 2030. Current installed capacity reaches 1,041MW, of which 83% is thermal, primarily natural gas, and the remainder renewables (wind, hydro and solar).
