Jamaica tightens oversight of Petrojam
Jamaica's Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, has issued the first orders aimed at addressing alleged mismanagement at state refinery Petrojam following an investigation by the country's auditor general.
The Jamaican leader called on the company's board to conduct an audit into the loss of 600,000b of oil over a five-year period and to take the necessary actions to recover misappropriated funds, government news service JIS reported.
"There could be the possibility of pilferage and, indeed, we have heard anecdotal cases of pilferage of finished products. But it could [also] be wastage... it could be technical losses," he was quoted as saying.
Regarding the funds, Holness said: "Where the board sees that, for example, payments were made for work on a contract and, by virtue of delays and changes, the contract is terminated... but full payment was made and work not completed... the board should seek legal advice and prepare to recover such funds through civil means."
The Prime Minister also directed the board to ensure that minutes of weekly meetings are recorded.
