Key Mexico City infra projects at risk from budget cuts - mayor

Mexico City mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera said at an event that construction of the city's biggest infrastructure projects, including a projected flyover to connect the capital to the new international airport, would be halted if the planned cuts to the 2017 budget are approved, according to local press.

Mancera said that if the federal government's budget proposal is passed by congress without changes related to the capital city's budget, the local government will have to implement a plan B, which means allocating funds only to essential expenses and halting any significant infrastructure works the city was planning to co-finance with the federal government, as was the case of the flyover.

The mayor confirmed he will meet with finance minister José Antonio Meade in the next few days, as the minister had previously announced in an interview, in order to discuss the implications of the budget cuts for the city.

Mancera also stated that he will join other state governors from his PRD party to protests the 2017 budget proposal in congress.
