KIO Networks unveils LatAm datacenter expansion plans

Mexican datacenter company KIO Networks, controlled by infrastructure investment fund I Squared Capital, outlined new expansion plans for the coming months and years, including novel sites in two of its core markets – Mexico and Colombia.

This year, the company plans to complete the construction of its second Querétaro datacenter, KIO QR02.

The 12MW capacity site will be “a key part” of a campus with three datacenters, all interconnected by fiber rings, the company is developing in the state’s El Marqués industrial park, KIO said on its website.

In its first phase, QR02 will have 1,200m2 data halls to service retail, wholesale, and hyperscale datacenter segments, it said.

"The construction is on track, and we're thrilled about the progress. It's a major leap forward for both us and our clients. We're growing stronger every day," said CEO Santiago Suinaga.

In May last year, the company said it was planning to invest US$400mn in the construction of two datacenters in Querétaro.

MONTERREY

In addition to the Querétaro campus, KIO bought land for a 14,000m2 site in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. The facility in the Asia Pacific park in Pesquería will be the company’s second in northern Mexico.

The project will initially feature two 1,200m2 data halls with power to supply 2MW of energy in its first phase.

The entire datacenter will be projected with a growth capacity of up to 8MW, and KIO said it plans to expand it to eight halls in a later phase.

The site will also be developed with triple-route redundancy for carrier connections, according to KIO.

COLOMBIA

Following the activation of KIO BOG1 in November, its first datacenter in Colombia, KIO sees room for a second site to double potential local capacity to 12MW.

BOG1 is a 5,000m2 building, featuring six computer halls across 2,000m2, and 6MW power capacity for colocation services.

The datacenter also has a tier III design certification, issued by the Uptime Institute.

KIO Networks reports 13 datacenters with 26MW of IT capacity in its portfolio.

The sites are distributed in Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Spain, providing services to around 2,500 clients from the financial, media, public and retail sectors, among others.

Miami-based parent I Squared Capital has expanded its presence in Latin America in recent years, targeting mostly the energy, traditional infrastructure and digital infrastructure sectors.

In addition to KIO, which it acquired at the end of 2021, I Squared more recently announced a US$400mn investment in Brazilian renewable energy company Órigo Energia.
