Lafarge posts US$1.15bn net profit in 2004

Paris-based construction materials company Lafarge posted an 868mn-euro (US$1.15bn) consolidated net profit in 2004, up 19.2% from the previous year, the company announced Thursday. In Latin America, Lafarge has interests in Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico and Venezuela. In the period, consolidated sales rose 5.7% to 14.4bn euros and operating profit on ordinary activities increased 9.8% to 2.12bn euros. The company said cement sales growth was mitigated by a decline in Latin America due to Brazil. RECENT NEWS In January, Lafarge purchased Ecuadorian cement maker Cementos Selva Alegre for US$130mn.
