LatAm buys less steel from China

Latin America's steel imports from China decreased 10% year-on-year in January-November to 6.3Mt, according to Latin American steel association Alacero.

The region's share of Chinese steel exports in the first 11 months was 9.4%, compared with 7.1% in the same period of last year. South Korea and Vietnam remained the largest importers of steel from China.

During January-November, Central America imported 1.3Mt of Chinese steel, followed by Chile (1.2Mt) and Peru (869,000t), according to Alacero.

Venezuela and Cuba reported the largest percentage decreases in imports from the Asian nation.

The association said approximately 68% of steel imports from China were flat products, 18% long products and 3% seamless steel tubes, with 11% being steel derivatives.

Alacero has expressed concerns over the threat that Latin American firms face from Chinese imports and has called on lawmakers in the region to protect the industry against unfair practices.
