Meanwhile, total spending on telecommunications in the region will reach US$219bn during 2014, according to the analyst.

Within the ICT sector, tablets, smartphones, professional IT services, storage and packaged software will be the fastest growing areas.

Tablet sales are expected to grow by 34% in Latin America this year, while that figure will reach 18% for smartphones, 11% for IT services, 11% for storage and 10% for packaged software.

Together, tablet and smartphone sales will grow by 28% in 2014, reaching 142mn units shipped to the region in the year, Villate said.

Meanwhile, the Latin American PC market will continue to struggle, and is set to fall by 8% during 2014 following declines of 7% in the previous year, he added.

Emerging segments such as public cloud, big data and Internet of Things are also expected to have a strong year in the region, according to the analyst.
