Legislative proposal seeks greater benefits from Peru solar plants
A bill has been introduced to Peru’s congress to establish a canon from solar power generation.
The canon would be made up of 50% of the income tax paid by photovoltaic plant concessionaires and help address social development shortfalls, according to the proposal.
The initiative’s author, Jorge Samuel Coayla Juárez of parliamentary group Juntos por el Perú-Voces del Pueblo, highlights the growing contribution of the renewable energy.
“The increase in the production of electrical energy, based on the exploitation of renewable natural resources, especially in the source of solar renewable energy resources, is increasing, in notable percentages, being important for the justification and support that motivates this legislative initiative of creation of the solar renewable energy canon,” the lawmaker argues.
Information from power grid coordinator COES shows that installed solar capacity in July was 398MW compared to 282MW a year earlier, with output from these plants up 44% year-on-year in January-July to 629GWh.
Coayla adds that solar plant concessionaires paid 493 million soles (US$132mn) in taxes last year.
The bill is available in the Documents box in the top right corner.
Previous proposals to establish a canon from wind power generation have not moved beyond the committee level.
