Lima airport, metro projects to test power grid resiliency

Electricity supply in Lima will come under stress in the coming years due to the expansion of the city’s airport and metro.

Power distributor Enel Distribución Perú provided the outlook in its proposed US$303mn transmission investment plan for 2025-29.

The forecast spend is part of energy and mining investment regulator Osinergmin’s process for the five-year period to approve plans submitted by owners of complementary and secondary transmission systems.

Enel highlights that the Barsi and Huarangal substations may face overloads in 2028, which will require the construction of the La Mar substation and a new transformer at Huarangal.

The company projects that demand in the Lima Norte, Huaral-Chancay and Huacho-Supe systems will jump to 1,752MW, 55MW and 60MW, respectively, in 2030 from 1,272MW, 38MW and 47MW in 2022.

Distributor Luz del Sur, which also serves Lima, plans to invest US$123mn in 2025-29 to help cover offtake, which it expects will grow 3.4% to 2,187MW by 2034.

Other sizable spend would come from Electro Sur Este (US$44mn), Electronorte (US$61mn), Electrocentro (US$49mn) and Hidrandina (US$45mn).

Total proposed investment from all companies, including generators, reaches US$830mn.

The timetable calls for Osinergmin to publish a resolution proposal approving the investment plans in February.

In a related note, the watchdog approved new power connection costs for the period September 2023-August 2027, with reductions of up to 9.05% for connections and up to 13.2% for reconnection and maintenance for residential and small business users.
