LNG expansion to isolated areas moves forward in Panama

Environmental permitting has begun for a project to expand the use of natural gas in remote communities of Panama.

Island Power (IPSA) filed an environmental impact study with the environment ministry to modernize its 2.82MW, three-unit Yaviza thermoelectric plant in Darién province.

The overhaul entails the installation of a 1,475kW gas-fired unit and LNG storage and regasification infrastructure, among other works. A second phase would replace one of the three existing diesel-fired units with a gas-fired one.

Diesel would be maintained in case of failures or maintenance of the new generation system which would use Caterpillar equipment.

IPSA plans to bring LNG from the AES Colón import terminal via cistern trucks. AES already supplies the company’s Santa Fe (8.85MW) and Tortí (3.86MW) plants in Darién and Panamá Este, respectively.

IPSA holds power supply contracts for 18 remote systems and one for Isla Colón that include solar, wind and storage systems.
