LNG on Suriname energy diversification radar

Suriname’s government is looking at the possible introduction of natural gas as part of a project to achieve a sustainable energy sector.

Information from the IDB shows that the preparation of a feasibility study and a public-private partnership framework for LNG is part of a US$35mn financing package the country submitted to the regional lender.

Although the country boasts upstream hydrocarbons operations, activity is limited to crude production of around 16,000b/d which feeds the local refinery.

Potential suppliers could include Trinidad and Tobago, which has been looking to secure new gas markets, and new LNG exporter Argentina. Associated gas from neighboring Guyana, which is heading to first oil in 2020, would be another option, as well as delivery from Peru and the US.

IDB funds also would help upgrade and expand power transmission and distribution infrastructure, and provide preinvestment support for tender processes related to utility-scale renewable energy.
