The general manager of Hampton Peru Mining Company, Jim Bannantine , stated that the Los Calatos project, located in Moquegua, has copper reserves for the next 24 years and exploration plans in its concession.
This was stated during his presentation at the last Mining Thursday, organized by the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP). “We will not be a mine as large as Quellaveco or Toquepala or Cerro Verde, but we will be a real-scale mine: 55 thousand tons of fine copper per year for 24 years,” he explained.
He also said that the mine will be 100% underground, where in addition to copper, there is also molybdenum. “Los Calatos has a significant resource base of 1.13 million tons of copper and a growing exploration potential both on the surface and underground,” he explained.
He also said that the mine will use 52% of its energy from renewable sources. Likewise, desalinated water and dry tailings from the mine will be used, and 80% will be recycled water. “The project has the potential to electrify the mining fleet and the transportation system in underground operations,” he emphasized.
Finally, Bannantine reported that the project has excellent road and electrical networks, which are paved up to the Port of Ilo and the Montalvo substation (33km away), with the potential to be integrated into the Intipampa solar energy generation project.
