Construction of El Salvador’s Francisco Morazán viaduct and expansion of the CA01W highway (Los Chorros), expected to demand US$412mn, will take two years.

“It is not a one-year project, it is approximately a two-year project in its construction stage, and this will depend on the offers,” public works minister Romeo Rodríguez was quoted as saying by local outlet La Prensa Gráfica.

The public works ministry (MOP) received economic proposals from South Korea’s Dohwa Engineering and a consortium formed by South Korean firm Pyungh Engineering and Spain’s Intecsa-Inarsa to supervise construction.

The parties previously presented technical proposals, which are under evaluation, with the economic bids set to be opened once this stage concludes on January 31.

Works involve expanding Los Chorros to eight lanes in the Santa Tecla, Colón and San Juan Opico municipalities, La Libertad department.

The three-phase expansion is part of the western corridor masterplan to improve mobility and safety, and boost trade through better logistics.
