Lula, Rousseff charged with conspiracy
Brazil's attorney general Rodrigo Janot filed charges against two of the country's former presidents, potentially jeopardizing Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's plans to be a candidate in next year's election.
Janot accused Lula and Dilma Rousseff (both pictured), along with other members of the Workers' Party, of conspiracy to deviate 1.48bn reais (US$477mn) in bribes between 2002 and 2016, the time in which they served as head of state.
Lula leads the polls for the 2018 presidential election with about 30% of the potential vote. His presidential aspirations already suffered one major blow in July when he was sentenced to over nine years in prison for his role in a corruption and money laundering scheme, a ruling he is appealing.
Other potential corruption charges hang over the former president and it will eventually fall on the supreme court to decide – probably in mid-2018 – if he can run for president again.
