Maracaibo metro works begin

Bnamericas
Construction has started on the metro system for Venezuelan city Maracaibo, the country's infrastructure ministry said Thursday. Works kicked off with an initial investment of US$3.8mn for the Altos de la Vanega station. Altos is the first of six stations that fall under line 1's first stage. The other stations are El Varillal, El Guayabal, Sabaneta, Urdaneta and Las Playitas, for a total length of 6.5km (1.5km are underground). Operations are due to begin by early next year, with some 14,000 passengers/day expected to use the line. Four lines will be built in total with work finishing in 2020. German-Venezuelan consortium Precowayss is in charge of construction. Maracaibo is the capital of Zulia state.
