Maranhão to hold rail project hearings next week

Brazil's Maranhão state infrastructure department will hold hearings April 8 and 9 in the cities of Balsas and Estreito regarding a rail project to connect the cities, the state government said. The hearings are required to launch bidding to build the 500mn-real (US$186mn), 204km rail line dubbed Ramal Ferroviário de Balsas. The project's economic and engineering details will be ready in June, state infrastructure secretary Luiz Alvim Filho said. The rail line will reduce by 100km the distance between Balsas and the ports of Ponta da Madeira and Itaqui in state capital São Luís. Cargo is currently shipped by truck. It will be the second stretch of the Ferrovia Norte-Sul rail line in the state; the first stretch runs 226km from Açailândia to Estreito.
