Matarani port operator plans upgrades for US$70mn

Terminal Internacional de Sur (Tisur), which operates Peru's Matarani port in Arequipa region, filed with environmental certification service for sustainable investments Senace documents that a part of the permitting process for a US$70 million upgrade of various facilities.

In the second modification of the environmental impact study, prepared by consultancy Walsh and which Senace is analyzing, “the construction of the reception, storage and connection to the conveyor belt system for the concentrate from the Zafranal project is proposed.”

Operations at the Zafranal copper project are planned to start in 2029.

According to Tisur, the Zafranal concentrate warehouse will have storage capacity of 40,000t and will be built on a 7,220m2 plot of land. A new mineral reception facility is planned to handle 40-50 trucks daily.

In parallel, auxiliary modifications are planned to handle higher amounts of minerals from copper miners Las Bambas, Antapaccay, and Cerro Verde.

Works include:

  • modification of the Las Bambas reception system, extension of the rail reception building and a new laboratory;
  • increase in volumetric weight of the Antapaccay concentrate warehouse from 45,000t to 65,000t;
  • use of encapsulated trucks for unloading minerals at the Las Bambas and Cerro Verde concentrate warehouses;
  • A new comprehensive truck wash;
  • expand and upgrade the wastewater treatment plant;
  • a new grey water treatment plant.

All works will be carried out within the concession area of the Matarani port terminal.
