MDC to enter Mexico with its first own datacenter project

MDC Data Centers will enter Mexico with its own datacenter after years of providing fiber crossings and data transportation services along the country's border with the United States and from US sites.

The Texas-headquartered company announced at its annual customer event in Mexico City the planned launch of the MDC-QRO datacenter. MDC confirmed partnerships for the site with Bestel, Axnet, Vivaro, TotalPlay, C3ntro, Fermaca, Gold Data and IENTC.

“For over a decade, MDC has fostered cross-border interconnection through our border connect platform,” CEO Juan Salazar said in a statement.

“Querétaro is the natural starting point for this next chapter, one that will guide our vision and growth for the next decade. We’re poised to deliver the next generation of network growth and connectivity solutions that our partners have been asking for.”

At present, MDC operates seven carrier-neutral datacenters, all located in US cities bordering Mexico: McAllen, Laredo, Eagle Pass and El Paso in Texas; Nogales in Arizona; and San Diego in California.

The company also reports partnerships with 52 network operators in its ecosystem for private interconnect or public peering, including Telefónica, Akamai, and Sparkle.

Construction and power

MDC-QRO’s construction is set to begin in early 2025 and operations in 2026.

The company claimed to have secured 2MW of power for the project, addressing concerns involving supply constraints for Querétaro’s growing datacenter initiatives.

The site will have 10,000 square feet of initial operational space and is designed to expand in line with market demand.

It will also be integrated with the border connect platform to deliver connectivity to all MDC facilities along the border, the company said.
