Another study finds maintenance errors at collapsed Mexico City metro line

A study commissioned by Mexico City’s attorney general’s office found metal bars of the stretch of metro line No. 12 that collapsed in May last year showed several deficiencies.

Local newspaper Milenio obtained the study and reported Sunday that the study found “no evidence of specialized inspection work or monitoring of deformed parts.” Malformations and deficiencies could have been detected through specialized maintenance, according to the study.

Deformations measured 8-10cm. Similar ones were also found on the Tezonco-Olivos stretch, which is why the study recommends a detailed inspection of the entire line. These deformations are rather normal and should be detected easily.

The study recommends “establishing norms for inspection, monitoring and maintenance of the structural elements and their malformations, as well as the [developing] expertise and the technical profile of the staff that carries [maintenance] out.”

Previous studies led to similar conclusions. Earlier ones also detailed a severe lack of maintenance.

The line’s Mixcoac-Tláhuac stretch collapsed on May 3, 2021, killing 26.
