Mexico City, October 11, 2023. After six months of having formed the Mexican Association of Data Centers (MEXDC) with the objective of being the spokesperson for the needs and requirements of companies related to the Data Center sector in Mexico and promote it as a sustainable, safe and reliable industry, the MEXDC shared with its associates and IT leaders the progress of its work commissions.

Within the framework of the DCD Connect 2023 event, where the leading companies in Mexico in the Data Center sector met, Amet Novillo, president of the MEXDC, explained that the Association has been well received by companies and different industries. of IT in Mexico and highlighted the importance of sharing the actions and efforts made in these months of work, in addition to reconfirming the purpose of the MEXDC.

On the other hand, Adriana Rivera, executive director of the MEXDC, stressed that the challenges as an industry are many, but the Association's work has focused on Energy, Sustainability, Regulation and Talent, areas in which the members have participated constant with its experience and future vision of the Data Center industry.

Energy Commission

Although Data Centers do not have their business in energy, it is one of the main inputs for their operation. Therefore, it is important that this industry is recognized as a critical mission sector for the country's growth and its digital transformation.

The Energy Commission, led by Arturo Bravo (Ascenty) and Héctor Sánchez (Equinix), established the objective of achieving close ties with the different government entities responsible for energy. The executives indicated that two approaches have been achieved where the dialogue focused on knowing the needs of Data Centers as an industry, where the problem is not in the generation of this resource but in the transmission to strategic development areas. .

An energy map was generated by geographic area with information from all the associates to understand the current needs in terms of megawatts and a projection of the needs for the next five years, highlighting that the associated companies will demand consumption of up to 650 MW.

The MEXDC agreed with the leaders responsible for energy in Mexico to establish working groups to plan actions that help the growth of the Data Center industry, in addition to sharing more sustainable energy alternatives; as well as a rapprochement with the Mexican Energy Association and the Mexican Association of Certified Energy Suppliers to join forces.

Talent Commission

Jose Luis Friebel (DCD/DCD Academy) and Alejandro Ríos (KIO), heads of the Talent Commission, explained that the MEXDC signed a collaboration agreement with the Polytechnic University of Querétaro to develop the talent capabilities needed by the Training Center industry. Data, the call was also made for the “Data Center Talent Scholarship” in conjunction with DCD Academy, which has achieved great participation in the sector.

They announced that on November 10 the “MEXDC Talent and Education Forum” will be held where dialogue panels will be held with experts, partners and universities to learn about industry trends in terms of knowledge and skills.

Finally, they revealed that they are managing to carry out a MasterClass that will address the trends of all industries that intervene horizontally with Data Centers.

Sustainability Commission

Guillermo Cipolla (Scala), leader of the MEXDC Sustainability Commission, shared that the work focuses on informing all levels that the Data Center sector is a clean industry, which generates employment, attracts investments, both for the community and government. It is also important that this industry becomes increasingly more efficient in its consumption of resources to reduce its carbon footprint.

The sustainability commission is one of the most followed by MEXDC associates because it is no longer a fashionable topic, it is a differentiating element in the market and business. This is why we are working on approaches and talks with national and international organizations to establish and implement best practices in Data Centers and implement renewable energy solutions that accelerate decarbonization.

Regulatory Commission

Amet Novillo (Equinix) and Alejandro Cantú (Layer 9), lead the MEXDC Regulatory Commission and commented that the Association has already had different approaches and talks with federal, state and municipal government entities.

The MEXDC met with Carlos Emiliano Calderón Mercado, coordinator of the National Digital Strategy, to collaborate with best practices in the different IT infrastructure projects in Mexico.

There was also dialogue in favor of making the regulations of the Data Center industry transparent at all levels of government, respecting the autonomy of each entity. All with the objective of achieving regulation that favors technological growth in Mexico, as well as attracting investments.

On the other hand, a “Decalogue of Commitments” was signed, a document that defines the ten strategic actions of the Association to lay the foundations of excellence for the Data Center industry in Mexico.

“The Data Center industry is the physical base that supports the digital transformation, making these infrastructures essential to improve the economy of modern societies. All associated companies are driving growth and the MEXDC has been well accepted in Mexico. We have worked a lot in these months and every day it is becoming more consolidated,” concluded Adriana Rivera, executive director of the MEXDC.
