Mexican automotive industry wants to shift gear toward electromobility
Mexican automotive association AMIA has presented proposals to President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government to boost electric vehicle (EV) production, attract investment, reduce emissions and position Mexico as a hub for innovation.
AMIA’s plan also emphasizes leveraging nearshoring and having "a strategy that ensures an effective transition to electromobility, as well as favorable conditions for the operations of companies that have invested in Mexico for decades, as well as to facilitate investment for the next three decades," AMIA general director Odracir Barquera was quoted as saying by daily El Universal.
At the Mexico Drive Forward Summit 2024, AMIA proposed developing public policies for electromobility and improving collaboration between industry and government to enhance and expand operations and increase investment.
Other proposals include strengthening the energy matrix to meet environmental goals and improving its reliability, upgrading digital and physical infrastructure to streamline trade, and reviewing the USMCA trade agreement and taking advantage of this and other trade deals.
Development of a modern and reliable vehicle registry was also suggested, along with industry-government dialogue to produce regulations that increase legal certainty in the sector
Barquera noted that the next six years will be crucial for achieving these objectives.
