Mexican power regulator issues fresh permit denials to private sector

Mexico’s energy regulator CRE has issued a new round of permit denials to private sector players

In its first ordinary session of 2022, the commission denied authorization for power generation to four applicants, as well as the modification of a self-supply permit, while approving a number of sanctions in the electricity sector.

The actions come against the backdrop of the intensifying debate in congress over proposed changes to the constitution that would likely trigger cancellation or reviews of all existing private generation and sales contracts.

The CRE refused to grant power generation permits to Energía Sierra Juárez Holding, FP Proyectos de Energía Renovable de México, Mares Energía and Energías Renovables Valle del Mezquital.

Private players in the private power sector have been up in arms for nearly two years after the CRE’s near-blanket permit denials and delays caused by its refusal to rule on requests in a timely manner, an issue also reported with interconnection permitting at grid operator Cenace.

The plenary session of the regulatory body also decided to deny the modification of the program and start and completion of works for the electric power generation permit E/1951/AUT/2017, granted to Ecoparque Solar Aguascalientes II
