Mexican presidential candidates update water and infra plans

The three candidates running for president in Mexico’s June 2 elections updated their water and infrastructure plans, which include roadworks and the renovation of the water distribution network.

Additionally, the candidate for Mexico City mayor, Clara Brugada, promised record infrastructure investments and to promote public-private partnerships.

Ruling Morena party’s presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum, who has a 20-point advantage in the polls, promised to build road infrastructure in Oaxaca state, consolidate development hubs along the interoceanic rail corridor, guarantee water supply and build solid waste management plants.

“We are going to build the highway from Tuxtepec to Oaxaca. We already have the highway from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido, now we have to connect to Veracruz, and the highway to the isthmus as well. On the coast, we have to guarantee the Puerto Escondido-Salina Cruz highway to the border with Guerrero and from Guerrero to Zihuatanejo, practically to Michoacán,” she said during a visit to Oaxaca state, according to news outlet El Economista.

Second-placed Xóchitl Gálvez from the opposition said during a campaign event in Durango state that she would order building a water treatment plant in Durango city and complete the Agua Saludable para la Laguna project.

“We will build a new highway that will link Durango and the Laguna region with Zacatecas [state]… and modernize the Durango-Parral road… We will improve connectivity with Gómez Palacio and Lerdo, so that nearshoring [companies] can arrive here. We will finish the Agua Saludable para la Laguna project, that the incompetent [federal government] has not been able to finish, and we will build the Tunal II [dam] to support farmers,” she said.

Center-left Movimiento Ciudadano candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez, running in third place, also said he would reinforce water infrastructure for agricultural use, which has seen budget cuts under the current administration.

Mexico City infra investment

Clara Brugada, who is a member of Morena and running for Mexico City mayor, said recently her administration would invest 20% more in infrastructure and public works, and signed an agreement with builders to boost public and private investment.

Brugada also promised to promote PPPs and fair and transparent bidding processes.

“During this [federal] administration, public investment grew 40% more than during the last presidential term, meaning 160bn pesos [US$9.6bn] were invested in public works, compared to 65bn pesos in the previous administration. [Mexico City] will not be left behind, and in the next [local] government we will break the record of public investment to advance another 20%,” El Financiero reported her as saying.

She added that she will focus on bicycle lanes, metro line modernization, five additional cable-car lines and the new line No. 0 of BRT system Metrobús.
