Mexican private sector wants to invest US$49.4bn per year in infra until 2030

Mexico's private construction industry hopes to invest nearly US$297bn in infrastructure works in the country during the next six years, the national construction chamber (CMIC) announced.

CMIC president Luis Méndez Jaled said during a press conference on Wednesday that this figure would be invested solely by the private sector at a pace of US$49.4bn per year.

“We estimate that during this six-year term, we should invest 6tn pesos (US$297bn), with the private sector contributing approximately 1tn pesos (US$49.4bn) per year. It's important to specify that within this 1tn pesos, a significant portion relates to civil works and construction. Construction accounts for approximately 43%, civil works 45% and specialized work 12%," he said.

Méndez Jaled added that economic stability and the rule of law are key ingredients for these investments to take place, but there are already positive signs.

“Co-investments are being discussed, the return of PPPs is being discussed, but they need to be more transparent and more competitive,” he underscored.

The chamber has held talks with infrastructure, communications and transport minister Jesús Esteva, Méndez Jaled said, adding that the CMIC fully supports President Claudia Sheinbaum’s infrastructure plan in which the member companies want to participate.
