Mexico 2020 airport projects outlook
Expansions and upgrades for several Mexican airports are scheduled to begin next year with private investment of 42bn pesos (US$2.2bn).
However, a few tenders for other airport projects with public investment have also been launched on government procurement site CompraNet.
The 29 airport expansions announced by the government for the next four years are part of the 147 infrastructure projects included in the first stage of the 2019-24 national infrastructure program (PNI).
Stage one does not include public projects like the three-airport system that replaces the Texcoco airport for Mexico City.
Over the next weeks, work will start on 18 of the 29 projects.
BNamericas takes a look at the most important stage-one airport works as well as those that are being tendered by the government.
NEW TENDERS
Chihuahua state launched two tenders to complete regional Barrancas del Cobre airport in Creel municipality.
While one tender includes earthworks, building structures, paving, signaling and protection devices, the other is for a contract to complete the visual navigation aid system.
Bidding is open until December 13.
On November 14, governor Javier Corral Jurado announced the national finance ministry (SHCP) confirmed a 55mn-peso investment to finalize the airport but added that 100mn pesos more were needed to get operations started.
Chihuahua has one international airport in capital Ciudad Juárez, which will receive a 337mn-peso investment in 2020 and 334mn pesos in 2021 under stage one of the PNI.
It is unclear if Barrancas del Cobre will also receive funds from the PNI.
At the end of November, several states launched tenders for minor airport modernization or restoration works.
On Tuesday bidding closed for access roads to the regional airport in Morelos state. Bidding for several airport works in Nuevo León, Quintana Roo, and Mérida also closed recently.
PNI AIRPORT WORKS
All 29 airport projects announced under stage one of the PNI involve upgrades, but specifics were not given.
Jalisco's Guadalajara international airport receives the biggest investment with 10.5bn pesos, followed by the Cancún international airport in Quintana Roo state that will receive 7.5bn pesos.
Officials said works on these airports will begin next year.
Other airports with investments above the 2bn pesos include Tijuana international airport in Baja California state, Los Cabos international airport in Baja California Sur, Mérida international airport in Yucatán state and Monterrey international airport in Nuevo León state.
Tenders for upcoming works will be launched in early 2020, according to official reports.
