Mexico border airport to open soon to boost tourism

The government of the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua will soon inaugurate a new airport to boost tourism in the region.

"With the inauguration of Creel airport, the touristic development of Chihuahua will undergo a new phase," state governor César Duarte said on his Twitter account.

The opening of the airport was delayed due to opposition to the project, according to media reports.

Around 361mn pesos (US$20.1mn) was invested to build the airport, according to information published by the finance ministry (SHCP).

The new facility will be located in Bocoyna municipality and will be known as Barrancas del Cobre Creel. Bocoyna is near the Sierra Tarahumara mountains.

Around 613,000 tourists a year are expected to use the airport, which is close to Mexico's famous Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre), which will contribute an estimated 1bn pesos to the local economy.

The airport was awarded as a 20-year concession and the government of Chihuahua has a 98% stake.
