Mexico City announces US$43mn metro line No. 12 repairs

Jorge Gaviño, director of Mexico City's metro system, said 800mn pesos (US$42.9mn) will be spent on repair work on the Atlatilco-Parque de los Venados stretch of problem-hit line No. 12.

The three-year program will target curves 37, 38, 43 and 44 of the line's underground section, which is 9km, almost half of the line's total length, he was reported as saying by local press. The project, which involves laying new track and carrying out foundation work, will be executed at night to avoid service disruptions.

Gaviño said 16.8bn pesos allocated to the metro system by the city government for next year is not enough for all planned work which includes modernizing and purchasing trains and updating automatic train operation systems and carrying out civil works.

To execute all planned projects about 20bn pesos is needed, he said.

Line No.12 opened in October 2012 but was partially shut down in March 2014 after track problems were detected. Eleven of the line's 20 stations were closed but have since reopened.
