Mexico City, China's CRRC ready to start US$2bn metro modernization
Mexico City will begin on July 11 the first stage of the 37bn-peso (US$1.84bn) modernization of metro line No. 1, awarded in November 2020 to a consortium formed by Chinese locomotive supplier CRRC Corporation and CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive.
The project involves a partial shutdown of 12 of the line's 20 stations, between Pantitlán and Salto de Agua, the government announced Monday.
Stage two will begin in February and take six months.
"By August 2023, we will be concluding the works of modernization, change and replacement of the new metro line No. 1," mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said in a press release.
Works involve the purchase of 29 trains, the replacement of 19km of railroads, the replacement of the drainage system, new control systems based on CBTC technology to guarantee trains’ high speed, and other new systems for mobile, radio and video communications.
A financing through the city's 2020 budget was approved unanimously by Mexico City’s congress in December 2020 to carry out a series of metro rehabilitation works. The debt will be repaid during 19 years.
