Mexico City to kick off construction of US$200mn elevated trolleybus line this week
Mexico City will begin construction of a 4bn-peso (US$207mn) elevated trolleybus line in the capital’s most populated borough, Iztapalapa, on May 15.
The first stretch of the 8km-long route on Ermita Iztapalapa boulevard was awarded to Impulsora de Desarrollo Integral (Indisa) at a price tag of 2bn pesos, city officials said in an online press conference on Tuesday.
Stretch one is 7.2km long and involves seven of the line’s 10 stations.
Indisa has up to 10 months to complete the project, officials said. Stretch two has been scheduled for 2021.
The trolleybus, one of the three mass transit projects that mayor Claudia Sheinbaum announced for Iztapalapa, will connect the Constitución de 1917 (line No. 8) and Santa Marta (line A) metro stations, which run parallel and are the main routes to enter the capital from the east.
Mexico City has already purchased 50 bi-articulated trolleybuses from company Yutong, officials said.
