Mexico closer to liberating 600MHz band
Mexico's telecoms regulator IFT completed the migration of a Mexico City pay TV channel operating on the 600MHz band to a new frequency on VHF, as it works to liberate the band for the deployment of 5G services in the near future.
The regulator said in a statement that it moved pay TV channel 51, part of local media group MVS, from the 692-698MHz frequency where it broadcasted in the nation's capital and surrounding areas to the 54-60MHz band on VHF (Very High Frequency).
IFT is in the process of liberating the 600MHz band, currently in use by 48 broadcast television channels, to make way for 5G connectivity services. The regulator has said that it expects that the band will be ready to be tendered by the first quarter of 2019.
If it were to remain on schedule, Mexico could become the first country in the world to free the band from 614-698MHz, making 84MHz available for new digital services expected to be up to 100 times faster than the current 4G standard.
Mexico recently tendered the 2.5GHz band in a process that saw AT&T and Telefónica win new blocks for 4.5G connectivity services, while taking Mexico to 580MHz of spectrum awarded for telecommunications, compared to the 1,300MHz recommended by the International Telecommunication Union's International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) standards.
