Mexico presidential frontrunner promises road and rail infra for Puebla state
Claudia Sheinbaum, who’s leading Mexico’s general election polls, promised to build and upgrade two road infrastructure projects and a rail line for Puebla state should she be elected president.
The campaign is in full swing, with elections slated for June 2 and the new president taking office October 1. Sheinbaum is running for the ruling Morena party and a close ally of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
During a visit to Puebla, Sheinbaum said that during her government, a Mexico City-Puebla-Veracruz rail line will be built and the Amozoc and La Mixteca highways be extended.
“We will [re]build the highway that already exists but is too small, across the Mixteca [region] and we will take it to Guerrero, so that it can be a highway that properly connects the states,” she said, news outlet Infobae reported.
Sheinbaum has expressed her support for López Obrador’s plan to revive passenger rail lines and has promised to build eight projects, including the Mexico City-Puebla-Veracruz line.
Meanwhile, her closest rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, has remained vague about the projects she would support, mentioning only a few like reviving the Texcoco airport.
Puebla state is led by interim governor Sergio Salomón Céspedes, a Morena party member. In the election on June 2, Morena’s Alejandro Armenta Mier, opposition candidate Eduardo Rivera Pérez and Fernando Morales Martínez of Movimiento Ciudadano will compete.
