Mexico readies feasibility studies for major rail projects

The Mexican government is getting ready to carry out feasibility studies for four of the largest rail projects in President Claudia Sheinbaum’s infrastructure plan.

At a cost of 1.5bn pesos (US$76mn), the studies will be for the Mexico City-Nuevo Laredo, Mexico City-Nogales, AIFA-Pachuca, and Naucalpan-Buenavista rail links, according to a report from daily Reforma.

They have all been mentioned as key projects in the long-awaited federal infrastructure plan whose publication has been delayed multiple times.

The four projects already have stretches built, and the feasibility studies will assess the risks, terrain, and the acquisition of land to build terminals, stations and yards.

The study related to the Mexico City-Nuevo Laredo link is expected to be ready by June next year, according to the report.

The projects have recently been included in the portfolio of the country's rail transport regulator (ARTF), which is a necessary step to request the funds for the feasibility studies from the finance ministry, the daily reported ARTF director Andrés Lajous as saying.
