Mexico readies new stadium project for Nayarit state

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has approved financing for a new baseball stadium in Tepic, capital of Nayarit state, where he recently revealed a series of infrastructure plans to boost tourism.

The complex will have capacity for 8,000 spectators, governor Miguel Ángel Navarro said on Twitter on Monday.

Capex is yet to be determined, as the project does not yet appear in the finance ministry’s (SHCP) investment portfolio. However, the governor said the area where it will be built will be rehabilitated this year and he will meet with environmentalists to avoid confrontations. 

"The space will be rehabilitated and we will seek to move the trees to a new Alameda de los Abuelas y Abuelos, after a dialogue with environmental groups," he said. 

Last year, the government launched a series of priority projects such as the 70km Jala-Compostela-Las Varas highway, for which a public-private partnership contract will be awarded in May, the modernization of the Tepic airport, and the Islas María tourism project, which seeks to turn an old women’s prison into a cultural center. 

Mexico’s agrarian, territorial and urban development ministry (Sedatu) has financed the rehabilitation and modernization of other baseball projects around the country. 

For example, the ministry launched three tenders last year for building three baseball stadiums in the southeast.
