Mexico renews Telmex concession for low-income coverage

Bnamericas

Mexican telecoms regulator IFT renewed a Telmex concession for the provision of telephony, data transmission and internet access to homes and through public booths on public roads in low income and under-connected regions.

The concession was initially granted in 2005 for 10 years. The extension will be for five years, starting February 5, 2025, IFT said in a statement.

“The main purpose of the concession was to cover localities that were characterized by low-income levels and a deficit of home telephony services that were far from urban centers and in areas of ‘high’ and ‘very high’ marginalization,” the watchdog said.

The coverage encompasses 134 so-called local service areas (ASLs). In total, Mexico has 320 ASLs.
