Mexico rolls out plans for new tourism hub near Maya train station

The Mexican government is seeking to create a tourism hub around a planned Maya train station in Quintana Roo state.

According to a tender call released by national tourism board Fonatur, in charge of the 1,500km rail project, a contract to carry out the tourism development program for the Nuevo Xcán zone will be awarded on August 31.

Bids for carrying out the analysis and drafting the program may be submitted on August 24, however.

The Nuevo Xcán area is located along the 257km stretch four of the Maya train, which will connect Izamal in Yucatán state and Cancún in Quintana Roo. Mexican firm ICA won the construction contract for the stretch that runs parallel to an existing highway.

Although the program will be up to the winner, the tender’s technical specifications detail that it must contain investment and project suggestions.

The Nuevo Xcán station was presented by Fonatur last year during the 2021 edition of Mexico’s biggest tourism event, Tianguis Turístico. It was designed by firms Taller Gabriela Carrillo and Biopolis.
