Mexico studying new dam for Colima state

Mexican water authority Conagua will carry out a dozen pre-investment studies from July to November to determine the technical, economic, social and environmental feasibility of a new dam in Cuauhtémoc municipality, Colima state.

The federal government assigned 3.4mn pesos (US$200,000) to complete the studies this year, according to the investment portfolio of the finance ministry (SHCP).

Dubbed “El Carretón”, the dam would be built on the Grande River in the northeast of the state to help solve water distribution problems for local agriculture.

The reservoir created would increase water for irrigation of rice, potentially increasing the area cultivated, and allow greater diversification of crops, which are currently limited by the lack of water supply in this part of southwestern Mexico, Conagua stated in its request for funds.

Further technical details of the project are not yet available as no previous studies have been done.
