Mexico to carry out flood control works at Lerma river

Mexico's water authority Conagua will carry out desilting works on selected sections of the Lerma river in Mexico state that are considered critical for flood prevention during the current rainy season.

Lerma is the country's second longest river and it has a high incidence of flooding.

Conagua has agreed with municipal and state authorities to exchange information and update the mapping of the river areas that are most prone to flooding, reported government news agency Notimex.

The country's defense ministry (Sedena) will also assist the water authorities in designing preventive actions to reduce the risk associated with floods, according to the report.

At the start of its trajectory, Lerma crosses through the Toluca valley in Mexico state, which is one of the country's most populated regions. Based on a number of research studies, the river is considered one of the most heavily exploited and polluted rivers in Mexico.
